Obituary

Thomas Harrison Summer, 79, died January 29, 2020 in the comfort of his home in Moncks Corner with his youngest daughter, Amanda, and his wife by his side. Born March 19, 1940, in Newberry, "Tom" "Tommy" was the son of the late Harrison Thomas Summer and Evelyn Christine (Mills) Summer. In addition to his parents, Tom was predeceased by his sister Susan (Summer) Gay. Surviving in addition to his wife, Ellen, are his sons, Dwayne Allan Summer and his wife, Michele, of North Charleston and Michael Thomas Weathers of Newberry; daughters, Shannon Christine Summer of Irmo and Amanda Summer of Moncks Corner; 5 grandchildren, Devin Summer, Lorelei Summer, Marlee Shock, Marshall Shock and Nolan Weathers; his twin brother, Robert Mills Summer and his wife, Judy of Lancaster, his younger brother, John Mayes Summer of Florence; and many loving nieces and nephews. Tom was a veteran of the US Army and the SC National Guard. He was a distinguished graduate of the SC Criminal Justice Academy in addition to being a graduate of the National Sheriff's Association and the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA. He was a proud recipient of the Order of the Palmetto from SC Governor Richard Riley and was twice selected as Officer of the year, first in 1979 by the Newberry County Law Enforcement Officers Association and again in 1999 by the Moncks Corner Police Department. Tom served as a respected and dedicated Law Enforcement Officer for 34 years between the Newberry County Sheriff's Office, SC ABC Commission, SC Dept of Corrections, and the Moncks Corner Police Department before retiring in 2004. He was an avid and skilled golfer for 60 years and the proud winner of many championships, events, and awards such as: medalist honors at Newberry Country Club (1974), the Inaugural Linrick Men's Golf Association (Columbia, SC) Championship (1970), teaming with Mike Roach to win the National Police Golf 2-man team championship (1999), and the Inaugural Berkeley Country Club Senior Championship (2001). Family will receive friends of Thomas Harrison Summer from 1:00 – 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, 321 W. Main St., Moncks Corner, SC 29461 (843) 761-4228.
