Obituary

Valerie Schumacher Voigt, 60, formerly of South Dakota, died Friday, December 08, 2017 at J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home in Newberry, SC. Born on October 28, 1957 in Wakefield, Nebraska, she was a daughter of the late Violet Klutman Schumacher and Donald W. Schumacher. During her professional career, Valerie was employed with Wells Fargo in various roles but also spent time as a nursing assistant caring for the elderly in Madison, South Dakota. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Sioux Falls. A social and civic oriented lady, she was active within her community in Sioux Falls. Valerie was a trumpet player who also enjoyed singing in choir. She was a member of the Augustana University All-City Band. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary and played trumpet for Veterans and Memorial Day service in both Norfolk, Nebraska and Chester, South Dakota. She is survived by husband, Michael Voigt of Sioux Falls, SD; children, Adam Voigt and his wife Jamie Riser Voigt of Chapin, SC and Ashley Lynn Voigt and her partner Scott Johnson of Anchorage, AK; siblings, Valisa Juracek and husband Reggie of Creighton, NE, David Schumacher of Norfolk, NE and Daniel Schumacher and wife Pamela of Austin, TX; father and mother-in-law, Dale and Peggy Voigt of Norfolk, NE; beloved nieces and nephews; and her loved grandchild to be. She is survived by countless friends, whom she considered family, including the members of "Val's Pals". Services will be held on Tuesday, December 19th at 11 am at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Osmond, Nebraska. Valerie will be laid to rest, next to her parents, at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery with a funeral service and luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Valerie may be sent directly to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Medical Mission Fund: 2200 S. Western Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57105. Valerie went to Guatemala with the medical mission team in 2008. Memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.whitakerfuneralhome.com.
