W. Barney Piester, 77, of Newberry, died Monday, August 23, 2021, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital surrounded by the love of his family. Born in Newberry on September 10, 1943, he was the son of the late Willie and Mable Moore Piester. Barney, affectionately known as "Sarge", began his career as a line man with the Newberry Electric Cooperative. He worked his way up to Crew Chief and retired after 42 of years of service. Barney was an active member of St. Philip's Lutheran Church, and formerly served as church councilman. He was also a member of the Lower Newberry Farmer's Association and helped develop St. Philip's Fire Department. He was good, kind, and generous. He was a hard worker and enjoyed working with Black Angus Cattle on his beloved Piester Hill Farm. His greatest pride and joy was without a doubt, his family. Barney is survived by his wife of 61 years, Merite Metts Piester; daughters, Annette Piester and Kay Traylor (Chris), both of Newberry and Marsha Gobles (Nathan) of Lexington; sons, William Piester (Mary Jo) of Newberry, and Jonas Piester (Deanne) of Little Mountain; sister, Virginia Mayer (Adam) of Pomaria; grandchildren, Ashley Copeland (Colby) and Willie Traylor (Taylor), both of Newberry; and great-grandchildren, Ethan and Wyatt Gobles, Savannah and Gunner Piester, and Karmen Copeland; Doug Metts, who was like a son to him; and his buddy, Deuce. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Katherine Wicker. A funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Terry M. Amick on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at 3 PM at St. Philip's Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Following the interment, the family will receive friends in the fellowship hall.
