Obituary

William Beale Moore reknowned pianist and professor emeritus of music at the University of Regina died August 8 in his home 39 LaVerendrye Way Regina Saskatchewan. He was 62. Mr. Moore was born in Newberry SC in 1942 the son of the late Dr. Milton Moore chairman of the music department at Newberry College and the late Evelyn Cromer Moore grand-daughter of Dr. George Cromer former president of the college.While at Newberry High School Mr. Moore was recognized as Musician of the Year for South Carolina. His first piano teacher Darr Wise of Newberry College inspired and guided him to two of the world's great piano teachers Cecile Genhart at the Eastman School of Music and Mme. Rosina Lhevinne at the Juilliard School of Music. Mr. Moore received full scholarships to both schools. Early in his piano career Mr. Moore toured university concert halls in the eastern United States. He joined the department of music at the University of Regina Canada in 1968 and served as head of its bachelor of music program 1982-88. He appeared with the Regina Symphony on TV and radio for the Canadian Broadcasting Company and in many chamber recitals. He was an accomplished accompanist performing with vocalists Irene Solemka Lynn Channing and many others.Among his compositions his "Three Little Romances" were performed by Joseph Fennimore at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Frederick Harris Ltd. of Ontario published his work. He made several recordings including "The Taste of Brass " with brass player Ed Lewis a colleague.Reknowned as a master teacher Mr. Moore's students have received national and international awards. Many received PhDs from Eastman Juilliard Indiana and other major universities and most perform widely. His devotion to his students is legendary and his influence remains profound. He was a past president of the Regina Musical Club and a former board member of the Teacher's Club. He served as adjudicator of major music festivals.Mr. Moore acquired a significant art collection including works by Jules Olitski Larry Poons and contemporary Canadian artists. The collection will be housed for a time in a memorial setting at the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina and a concert honoring him is being planned.Survivors include: two daughters Margaret Holland Zeltner of Bedford New Hampshire from his first marriage to Carol Zerkel of Wyoming Pennsylvania and Annabel Holland Moore of Atlanta Georgia from a second marriage to Lila Elizabeth Summer of Newberry South Carolina; two stepsons James and Rob Knox from a third marriage to Patricia Bradley-Moore of Regina; a brother Dr. George Moore of Stockbridge Georgia and two sisters Evelyn Moore of Cambridge Massachusetts and Anne Duffie of Prosperity South Carolina. A service in his honor was held at 4 p.m. Wed. Aug. 31 at Whitaker Funeral Home 1704 College St. in Newberry SC. Mr. Moore's ashes were interred nearby at Rosemont Cemetery. Condolences will be conveyed through George Moore 4256 Janet Dr. Stockbridge GA 30281. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Bill Moore Memorial Edition aiding the music library of the department of music Newberry College where his books will be housed.
