Obituary

William E. "Billy" DeHihns, Jr., 88, of Newberry, died Thursday, April 12, 2018 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Born on July 17, 1929 in the Mt. Pleasant section of Newberry County, he was the son of the late William E. and Eunice Smith DeHihns. Billy was a graduate of Newberry College and was a veteran of the United States Air Force having reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church where he had served as a member of the Official Board and on other committees and was a past member of the Civitan Club and the Exchange Club. He had a lengthy career in banking joining the staff of S.C. National Bank (SCN) in 1956. Billy was appointed manager of the SCN College Street Branch, a position he held until its closing. After thirty-five plus years, he retired from SC National Bank. He was a long time employee of Whitaker Motor Court and also a long time funeral assistant at Whitaker Funeral Home, working until his health no longer permitted. He enjoyed horses, in particular Tennessee Walking horses, and especially enjoyed the many times he attended the Tennessee Walking Horse World Celebration. Billy was well known throughout Newberry County and the State as an exceptional wedding coordinator, directing weddings for decades. He was so well liked that he conducted generational weddings—first the mom's wedding and years later the daughter's. His kind and gentle spirit leaves its mark on many people. He is survived by his sister, Virginia "Jenny" DeHihns Moon, a nephew and great niece, many caring cousins and countless devoted friends who will all miss him. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Grace D. Davis, brothers –in-law, Kibler Moon and William J. Davis, and nephew, William J. Davis, Jr. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 20, 2017 at the Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. David Surrett and the Rev. Jim Williams. Memorials are suggested to Central United Methodist Church, PO Box 67, Newberry, SC 29108. Memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.whitakerfuneralhome.com. Whitaker Funeral Home of Newberry is assisting the family.
