Obituary

William "Eric" DeYoung, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and veteran, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, service, and quiet strength. Born on February 3, 1948, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the late Virginia Gary Pollard and William Landrum DeYoung, Eric grew up in Greer, SC, where he developed a deep sense of responsibility and purpose that would guide him throughout his life.

A 1966 graduate of Greer High School, Eric excelled both academically and personally, graduating with honors while actively participating in ROTC and the Boy Scouts of America as an Eagle Scout. His commitment to service continued at Clemson University, where he was enrolled in the ROTC program and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Psychology in 1970.

Following his graduation, Eric was commissioned into the United States Army, serving with distinction in the Air Defense Artillery Branch. During his four years of active duty, he held key leadership positions as a platoon leader and executive officer at a Nike Hercules Nuclear Missile site, serving in both Japan and Fort Bliss, Texas. He rose to the rank of Captain before resigning his Regular Army commission in 1974.

After his military service, Eric transitioned into the apparel industry, working in merchandising and manufacturing, and later became an entrepreneur. He spent most of his adult life in Chapin, South Carolina, where he found joy and peace fishing on Lake Murray and building a life centered on family, perseverance, and quiet generosity.

Eric is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Nicole Staelen DeYoung; his daughter, Kristen DeYoung Pitts, her husband Chandler; and their children, Mary Chandler and William; his son, Evan Marc DeYoung, his wife, Stephanie; and his daughter-in-law, Janna DeYoung; and grandchildren, Hunter, Zachary, and Ashtyn. He is also survived by his sister, Jacque DeYoung Land, and her husband Gerald Peter Land of Greer, SC.

He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Eric DeYoung, whose memory remained a cherished part of Eric's life.

Eric DeYoung will be remembered for his steadfast character, sharp intellect, deep love for his family, and the quiet pride he took in his service to country and community. His legacy lives on in the lives of his children and grandchildren, and in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date.

The family requests memorials be made in Eric's memory to the Boy Scouts of America or the Veterans' Support Organization in Chapin.
