Mr. Wilson Benjamin "Benji" Leavell, Jr., 64, of Newberry, S.C., died on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at his residence.

Born on May 4, 1959, he was a son to Mrs. Vesta Jeannette Dickert Poag and the late Mr. Wilson Benjamin Leavell, Sr.

Benji was a long time Electronic Technician for computers and over his career he worked for a number of years with NCR, Solectron and Union Signal. In his younger years he had a fond interest in NASCAR racing and enjoyed watching his favorite drivers, David Pearson and Richard Petty race the track. Benji was an avid deer hunter and would often continue his appreciation of the outdoors by fishing as well. Benji enjoyed discussing politics and loved Gamecock football. He always had an interest in history and enjoyed researching his family history. Family meant a lot and was important to Benji; he was very involved in his nieces' and nephews' lives. Benji will always be remembered for his willing dedication to help others when needed, especially during the care of his mother.

In addition to his mother, Jeannette, he is survived by his sister, Lori Meetze (Travis); nieces, Nena Auton and Heather Auton (James); nephew, Tyler Poag (Nikki); and his great-nieces and nephews, Brooklyn, Kade, Madisen, Emily, Gracyn, Colton and Emalyn; great great-nieces Hadley and Blake.

In addition to his father, he was predeceased by a brother, James "Jim" Newton Poag.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, July 28, 2023, at Whitaker Funeral Home Chapel, 1704 College Street, Newberry, Justin Baxley will be officiating the service.

Pallbearers will be, Tyler Poag, Brian Bleichner, Kade Bleichner, James Leitner, Clay Beck and Dale Dickert.

Burial will be at Newberry Memorial Gardens, 15127 CR Koon Highway, Newberry, S.C. 29108.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
