Obituary

Winnette White Buice, "Nette" was born Nov. 6, 1918 in Lithonia, GA, to Lonie B. and Sybil F. White. She died on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at the Heritage at Lowman. She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Dewitt M. Buice, and is now resting in the Heavenly Home with Jesus. A graduate of the University of Georgia, she taught in DeKalb County public schools and worked for Southern Railway. Her husband Dewitt's career with Southern Railway took them to Arlington, VA, where they made their home for 20 years. They retired to Chapin, SC, in 1979, where they joined Chapin Baptist Church. Nette loved and enjoyed the members of her Joy Sunday School Class there for many years. Winnette is survived by a sister, Montine W. (Jim) Luther, 10 nieces and nephews, 32 great nieces and nephews, and 42 great, great nieces and nephews. A loving and giving sister and aunt, she was dearly loved by each of them. Her legacy of culinary comfort in the baking of pound cakes and yeast rolls to share with all near her (especially soldiers at Walter Reed Hospital and family always) leaves a high bar to leap toward for a younger baker in the family. She also drew great joy from her close relationship with Max Cleland, veteran and former U.S. Senator from Georgia, which she treasured very dearly. It began as he grew up next door to the Buice's Lithonia home and proved a rich blessing during the time they were both near Washington, DC, and continued until her passing this week on August 15, 2018. Her family greatly appreciates the care and love shown by the staff members of Generations of Chapin, Heritage at Lowman and Lutheran Hospice of Chapin. Visitation for Nette will be from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Chapin Baptist Church. Services will follow at 2:30 PM conducted by the Rev. Michael Hull and the Rev. Philip Vaughn. Burial will be in the Chapin Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials in her memory are suggested to Boys Farm, Inc., 6655 SC-34, Newberry, SC 29108. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.whitakerfuneralhome.com. Whitaker Funeral Home of Chapin is assisting the family.
