Winnie Davenport Senn, 87, of Newberry died Friday, May 1, 2026, surrounded by her family.
Born on August 26, 1938, in Newberry County, SC, she was a daughter of the late William and Lola Hendrix Davenport and was the last surviving member of her family. Winnie was blessed to have grown up in a large and loving family, and she cherished her relationship with her eleven siblings.
Winnie carried that love of family throughout her life - taking special joy in creating a happy, welcoming home for her family and friends alike. In 1957, she married William Pettus “Billy” Senn , with whom she built a beautiful life over their 68 years of marriage. Mom to Mark and David, she was active in their endeavors, serving as Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, chaperoning numerous trips and excursions, and always inviting their friends to stay for dinner.
As she became Grandmama, and later GiGi, she showed that same love to the next generations. Winnie and Billy always had time for their grandchildren, an investment that has paid off. They made it to all the school performances and sporting events and took wonderful trips to Charleston, North Carolina, and Washington DC with the grandchildren.
Winnie was an active member of Central United Methodist Church for many years, serving as President and member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, Treasurer of the United Methodist Women Circles, and teacher of various Sunday School Classes. Prior to joining Central, she had been a very active member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Her vivacious spirit and warm smile brought a ray of light to all she encountered. Always “fashionably” late and impeccably dressed, Winnie was active in the community and enjoyed being with others and supporting local events of Newberry County. She was a former member of the Newberry Jaycees, various Bridge clubs, and her favorite, Dance Club with Billy. Winnie had a gift for finding what brought her joy and surrounding herself with it daily; her greatest joy was always her family.
Winnie is survived by her sons Mark Senn (Lisa) and David Senn (Fran); grandchildren, Rob Senn (Dr. Jackie Bangma), Mary Alex Kopp (Robbie), Mac Senn (Maya), Will Senn (Alicia), and Sarah Jane Harrison (Ryan); great-grandchildren, Palmer and Cal Kopp, and June Senn; sister-in-law, Donna Davenport and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her siblings, Lillian Long, W.L. Davenport Jr., Kathryn White, Myra Trefsgar, Doris Counts, Willard Sease, Ida Underwood, Elsie Heller, Anne Coats, Bobby Davenport, and Ronald “Ronnie” Davenport.
Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Keith Stewart at 1:30 PM, Friday, May 8, 2026, at Central United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service in Henry Hall.
The family expresses their deep appreciation to the team at Dementia and Elder Care, LLC for their exceptional care of Winnie, especially Diana Brown; and to Mike and Lynn Underwood and Frank M. and Sandy Senn for their faithful friendship to Winnie over the years, but especially during Winnie’s declining health.
Memorials are suggested to Central United Methodist Church, 1005 College St., Newberry, SC 29108.
Whitaker Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Mrs. Winnie Davenport Senn.
